Any members who did not receive an invitation should contact Lauren or Sheila. On the e-vite were assignments for course, based on last names.

Bob Lott, club president

Club member Nancy Cordaro is in an exhibit at Art Partners Studio in Coatesville. Cards were available at the meeting. http://www.artpartnersstudio.org/

For those who won first place ribbons in the print categories this year, you will need to upload them to the website to have them be included in the People's Choice Award. This is particularly important for the May winners, since there will only be a few days before the voting survey. Voting for People's Choice will be before the final meeting. There will be first, second, and third place winners in color and black and white. The digital images have already been uploaded.

Voting for next year's officers will be at the next meeting. You must be present to vote, and the winners will be announced at the end of the meeting.

Bob has been rearranging information for the online galleries. There is a long list of galleries. He is splitting them up by club year. May's galleries are standalone, not in 2011-2012.

Bob judged a competition for the Delaware Photographic Society. He noticed that they have a different way of critiquing for competitions that allows for critique at the end. He's been inviting members to request critiques from the judge, if they are interested.

The current show at the Art Association is the Invitational Show. Invitations were given to artists who have won awards, sold a lot, or have had a solo show in the last two years. Bob encouraged members to get more involved in the Art Association by joining and participating in their shows.

Bob, for Luis Morales
Luis has had a few responses from members interested in participating in the show at the Henrietta Hankin branch of the library, which begins on May 26. There is space for quite a few pieces. This is an easy way to begin getting involved in shows. He will send out more information via Yahoo Groups.

Luis is also looking for at least two more volunteers to help shoot the Eli Run (5K run) on May 12th. Contact him if you are interested.

End-of-the-Year Party - Lauren Miller
The party will be held the first Tuesday in June, at the Chester County Art Association. Members will receive an e-vite. Please RSVP, so she know how many to expect. The party is BYOB; the club provides water and soda. Club members bring a covered dish and are welcome to bring a guest. Volunteers are needed to set up and clear down. Bob added that, weather permitting, we may use the patio as well.

Club Shoots - Jim Wilson
Chanticleer - The first group went on Thursday. They had perfect light and a good time. He hopes that the group going on May 19th has the same good light. A gallery for both outings has been set up on the website. Members are invited to submit up to four images, following the same guidelines as for competition submission.

On Friday, Jim and Betsy will be scouting Bushkill Falls for this year's final outing, which will be the first weekend in June.

Jim is looking for ideas for next year's outings. Please e-mail him with suggestions. You are welcome to submit ideas that we've done before, if you'd like to go again. He'll put all ideas into a poll, and the top vote-getters will be next year's outings.

Pre-Meetings - George Chiodo
Several topics have been selected for next year's pre-meetings. The fall pre-meetings have been announced:

September - Gary Nelb will present for our first meeting

October - Beginners/new members: preparing and uploading images

November - New member critique

Workflow is one area where members have expressed interest. E-mail George with ideas and/or needs.

Speaker
Ron Tarver
http://www.rontarverphotographs.com
www.photo-ops.net

Ron is a staff photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer. He teaches at Swarthmore College, and is a 2001 Pugh Fellow in the Arts. He recently partnered with Rob Graham, to host photography workshops, excursions, and classes.

He is partnering with museums and other non-profits for workshops and excursions. He recently led a workshop at Awbury Arboretum in Germantown. Awbury will host an exhibition of images from the workshop on May 12th, and the images will be uploaded to the website following the show. He enjoys these partnerships, which give smaller arboretums and non-profits more local exposure.

The Inquirer recently won a Pulitzer Prize for their series on school violence. In its announcement, the Pulitzer committee said the series used "powerful print narratives and videos to illuminate crimes committed by children against children and to stir reforms to improve safety for teachers and students." The entire project can be found here:http://www.philly.com/philly/news/special_packages/inquirer/school-violence/118812644.html. More information about the project can be found at
http://articles.philly.com/2012-04-17/news/31355824_1_south-philadelphia-high-school-inquirer-district-and-state-data.

An day long race riot between black and Asian students at South Philadelphia High received a lot of national press, and spurred the Inquirer's report on violence in the public school system. Ron spent a year at South Philadelphia High, and discussed many of his images. He saw what was happening in the school and how the new principal and individual students worked to ease racial tensions. He noted that when you shoot a story like this, there's a lot of not much big happening. As a photographer, he needs to tell the story through the small happenings, and through people's expressions.

Pre-Meeting Links from Bob Lott:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRW9AmDPqr0

Text Description:
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-sensor-cleaning.htm

Submitted by Chrys

Bob Lott, Club President
Bob welcomed 5 guests and 1 new member to the meeting. He shared some feedback he received regarding distractions at the last meeting. He asked those using electronics to move to the back of the room when the lights go out and to be respectful, so that others can hear what's going on.

The end-of-year competition will be all digital. All first place winners may compete. The digital entries have already been uploaded. Print winners will need to upload to the web site in order to compete. Anyone who needs help uploading can contact Bob for help.

Bob reminded the club that members can add their websites to the links section of the web site. To add a link, forward your name and web address to Bob.

Bob shared information about the Paint the Town/West Chester plein air competition. It runs during the week of May 29-June 2. More information and an application can be found on the CCAA web site at http://www.chestercountyarts.org/node/525.

Two other opportunities were shared by club members. The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is hosting a lecture with Lois Greenfield on April 26th. Information will be shared through Yahoo Groups. http://www.philaphotoarts.org/visiting-artist-lecture-lois-greenfield/ . The Green Valley Association at Welkenweir is having a free/donations welcome photo walk on May 12th. There were some postcards available at the meeting. Space is limited; contact 610-469-7543 or gva@greenvalleys.org to register.

Luis Morales
The photos displayed at the Exton Mall have been taken down. There was no traffic or interest while they were up. Luis will bring them to the next meeting.

The possible show at Cosi is doubtful. Luis has not heard back from the manager. He will make one last call and then give up.

The exhibit at the Henrietta Hankin branch of the library is scheduled for May 27th. If you would like to participate, e-mail Luis. The library will forward contact information if anyone shows interest. Luis addressed several member questions. This is an open show, within limits for acceptable content. All work must be framed and ready to hang.

Luis asked members to submit five ideas for competition themes for next year. He will compile the list onto Survey Monkey, and will send the survey out to the members. The top 8 winners will be next year's themes. He asked members to be as specific as possible with their suggestions.

Luis presented the nominees for next year's club officers:
President - Bob Lott
Vice-President - Tom Pepe
Treasurer - Fiona Keyes
Secretary - Buzz Mossholder
Members-at-Large (2 positions) - Bill Rahling, Steve Ebner, Lauren Miller

A motion was made and seconded to approve the nominees. The motion was passed by members present. Bob will post the nominees on the web site. Members must be present to vote at the May 17th meeting. Election results will be announced at the end of the meeting.

Club Outings - Jim Wilson
The covered bridge tour last Saturday had about 20 attendees and went well.

The May outing to Chanticleer is full. Five members were on the waiting list, and a separate outing on April 26th was made available to them. Anyone else interested should contact Jim to be put on the waiting list. Anyone on the list who cannot attend should contact Jim.

Our final outing will be to Bushkill Falls on the first weekend in June. There is a campsite nearby, if anyone wants to camp out.

Jim asked members to post suggestions for outings to the Yahoo Group. He will set up a survey for members to vote on next year's outings.

Pre-Meeting - Bob Lott
Bob will lead next month's pre-meeting on sensor cleaning. He'll share what it takes to clean the sensors, the tools used, etc.

Competition
Assigned Category - Flowers
Judge - Bev Michel
http://michelphoto.com/

The scheduled judge, Malcolm Raynes, was laid up due to emergency surgery.
Bob Lott, club president
There were a few issues with the competition uploads to the web site this weekend. The problem may have been caused by large images being uploaded, or possibly a lot of people uploading at the same time. He believes that everything has been squared away.
A member had suggested to Bob that sensor cleaning would be a useful as a pre-meeting topic. Bob asked for feedback from the members and received several replies of interest. The pre-meeting topic for May will be sensor cleaning.
Two new members were welcomed to the club.
George shared that the Guardians of the Brandywine photo contest has been extended. We first learned about this contest in the fall. You can find more information on their website. http://www.watchourwaters.org/
April Pre-Meeting (Flower Macros) - Anita
At the April pre-meeting, Anita will show what she does when photographing flower macros. She will set up tables for members to practice. About 30 members present expressed interest in the meeting.
Sheila Yamasaki, club vice-president
By-Law Amendment
Sheila read aloud the proposed new language for the by-laws.
"Article V, Meetings
Chester County Camera club meetings are held twice per month, from September through May, on a schedule set by the Steering Committee. One meeting per month shall be an instructional meeting, and the other meeting shall be a competition meeting. Exceptions to the meeting schedule may be made as determined necessary by the Steering Committee."
Sheila clarified that the current wording states that the club meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday. This is no longer accurate. The new wording will ensure that our by-laws are accurate.
A motion was made to approve the language. The motion was seconded, and was passed by a verbal vote by members present.
Photo Competition
Sheila shared information on the "I Love Classic Towns" photo competition sponsored by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. Posters were available at the meeting. There are several different categories, with cash prizes. Winning images will become part of a traveling show. After reviewing the rules, Sheila's impression was that they are being respectful of photographers' rights. http://contest.classictowns.org/
Thank You Cards
If you print out cards with your photos and would like to donate a pack to be used in the club's thank you notes to judges and speakers, plase contact Sheila.
Nominations for Officers - Luis Morales
Nominations will be announced at the next meeting. Anyone interested in running for club office should contact Luis. Following the announcement, nominees will be posted on the web site, and we will vote in May. Members must be present in order to vote, and results will be announced at the end of the meeting.
Club Shows - Luis Morales
Luis is waiting to hear from the manager at Cosi, and will be contacting him. The window display at the mall has been taken down. The display received no interest from buyers.
Club Shoots - Jim Wilson
Last Saturday's graffiti shoot was well attended by over 30 members. Bob Lott noted the paint ballers that were there as well, with their own impressive array of gear.
April 14 - Covered Bridges: The logistics are still being worked out, and will partly depend on the number of members interested in attending. It will cover 4 or 5 bridges.
May - Chanticleer: Gene will open this outing for members to sign up later this week. It is limited to 20 attendees. There will be other opportunities for Chanticleer later, and Gene will let us know about them.
June - Bushkill Falls: This will be the first weekend in June. Plan to bring a picnic lunch.
Competition
Assigned Category - Patterns in Nature
Judge -Kevin Loughlin
www.wildsidenaturetours.com
Kevin is the owner of Wildside Nature Tours, where he leads nature oriented tours worldwide.

Bob Lott, club president
Several club members are participating in the current show in the main gallery. Bob suggested that club members consider becoming active with the Chester County Art Association, if they aren't already.
Three guests and two new members were welcomed to the meeting.
Sheila Yamasaki, the club vice president, introduced a proposed change to the by-laws, to address a change that is needed due to the changes in the meeting schedule. The by-laws currently state that the club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The proposed change will be state that the club hold meetings twice per month, on a schedule set by the Steering Committee. Following the procedures for changing the by-laws, written notification was of the proposed change was made via Yahoo Groups. Hard copies were also available at the meeting. At the next meeting, members will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed change.
New Elections - Luis Morales
Luis reported that he has found volunteers for almost all of the officer positions for next year. Current officers in attendance provided information of what each of the jobs entails:
President (Bob Lott) - coordinates activities of the club, schedules Steering Committee meetings, appoints members to fill key non-elected positions, and does other tasks as needed to keep the club running smoothly.
Vice-President (Sheila Yamasaki) - assists the president as needed, and arranges speakers for the year. Sheila received a list of possible speakers from last year's vice-president, and has shared information with other camera clubs, creating a fairly comprehensive list of speakers.
Secretary (Chrys Haldeman) - takes minutes of club meetings, and Steering Committee meetings, and posts minutes to the website.
Treasurer (Bob Lott, for Sue Jordan) - manages club finances, paying speakers, etc.
Members-at-Large (Sally Riddle, Ed Heaton) - Attend Steering Committee meetings, contribute to decision-making, and approve nominations for club elections
Club Shoots - Jim Wilson
March 17 - Graffiti Site (led by Bob Lott) - information on the shoot has been posted on the club website, Yahoo Groups, and on the club's Facebook page. Participants will be meeting at the site at 9:00 am. Those interested in carpooling will meet at Panera in Exton, at 8:00. Bob reports that construction has blocked some access. He has posted a new map on the web site. There is ample, no-fee parking at the site, along the road by the barricades. Bob recommended bringing a wide-angle lens, and advised members to be aware that some of the ceilings at the site are falling down.
May 19 - Chanticleer (led by Gene) - Chanticleer has limited this outing to 20 participants, on a first-come basis. A message will be sent through Yahoo Groups for members to sign up. Chanticleer will be opening at 8:00, and there is a $10 entry fee to the garden. Gene reported that they have other dates that they will be opening early, and he will advise members of them when he hears about them. All participants are required to sign Chanticleer's tripod agreement. The tripod agreement grants photographers the right to sell images and to use them editorially, giving Chanticleer location credit. Images from Chanticleer may not be used for stock or commercial photography. Gene will forward the agreement via pdf file to participants.
All other outings for the year have been posted on the website. Dates and details will be added as arrangements are finalized.
Club Shows - Luis Morales
Luis has delivered the proposed images to Cosi and is waiting to hear from the manager. He is also waiting to hear from Darcy from the CCAA, regarding the mall windows. He will be meeting with someone from the library to go over the specifics of a show there.
April Pre-Meeting - Anita Bower
Anita is running April's pre-meeting on macro flower photography. She will set up flowers and backgrounds in the gallery, explain what she does, and give time for participants to shoot. She recommends bringing a camera tripod, and macro lens if you have one. Other gear, such as a cable or remote release and/or a reflector would be helpful. She will send more information via Yahoo Groups.
Speaker - William Earle - Uncommon Portraits
http://www.wfephotography.com/
Bill teaches classes at the Chester County Art Association. He spoke about portraits and the wet transfer process. He defined "uncommon portraits" as ones that grab and hold the viewer, drawing them in with emotion or evoking questions to create a dialogue between the viewer and the portrait.
To create his uncommon portraits, he:

Pays a lot of attention to highlights and shadows, to add dimension, emotions and feelings

Focuses on the "other"; the subject is not included in the portrait, but is seen through the focus on something that gives information about him or her

Uses a minimalist, clean approach, without a lot of distractions

Uses both film and digital

Uses the photographic elements of time and light to capture a moment that will never be exactly the same again

Connects and engages the subject, creating a collaboration between both parties

Has a plan, but leaves space for the shoot to evolve

Uses all different kinds of lighting, paying attention to details
His advice to photographers included,

Be your own toughest critic; only display work that you are completely proud of

Value critique as a learning experience, and be honest and open to others' views

Photograph what you are passionate about

Pay attention to how finished work is presented

Look at lots and lots of pictures
Bill finished with a quick introduction to the wet transfer process that he teaches at the Art Association. In a nutshell, a digital image is printed on a transfer sheet, then coat a piece of clear film with a liquid emulsion and let it dry. How the coating is applied will effect the results. The image is pressed onto wet watercolor paper, using a roller, the back of a spoon, or another tool. Images can be transferred to a variety of surfaces (fabric, wood, metal) using this method.
Bill currently does not have any classes scheduled, but he does have a mailing list for those who would like to notified of upcoming classes.

Submitted by Chrys

[size]Bob Lott, club president
Bob has added a favicon to the club website.
Tonight, there were two guests and one new member. They each learned about the club through either an online search or through word of mouth after meeting a club member. Bob plans to regularly recognize new members and guests, to help them feel welcome.
Club Shoots - Jim Wilson
Thirty-one people attended the lighting workshop last Saturday, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Jim thanked Sheila for running the workshop, and also thanked Betsy, Sean and everyone else who brought gear or otherwise helped out.
Upcoming Shoots:
March 17 - Graffiti Underground in Philadelphia, led by Bob Lott. Bob reported that this site may be in danger of going away. He's been there recently with no problem, but has gotten word that the area's been fenced in. He will be in the city this weekend, and will check to see if the site is or is not available. If the site isn't available, Jim will consult the votes from last year's poll to determine an alternative.
April - Covered Bridges
May - Chanticleer, led by Gene
Bob addressed a question that has been brought up about guests attending club shoots (either as a friend of a club member or a guest joining the shoot). For purposes of following club rules, a club shoot will count toward guests being able to attend two meetings without joining the club.
Club Shows - Bob Lott
Luis hasn't provided any updates, following minor surgery. He is currently working on getting approval for a show at Cosi in Exton. The club will also be showing at the Henrietta Hankin branch of Chester County Library in late May.
Opportunities - Lauren Miller
Lauren has posted information about a couple of opportunities that club members might be interested in. The Art House Co-op in Brooklyn is planning an exhibit called "The Meal". On Friday, February 24th, at 12:00 PM, take a self-portrait of your meal, and send them a print. More information can be found at http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/themeal
The CCAA's current exhibit will be closing, and their next exhibit is entitled "Water". This is a juried show. He hopes that it continues.
Bob passed on information about a several opportunities that club members may be interested in. Visit their web site (http://www.plasticclub.org/ ) for information on new shows.
Westchesterpa.com is a web site that gets about 400,000 hits per month. They are seeking photographers to share their photos of the West Chester area. Additional information can be found in a news item on the club website.
Club Shoots - Jim Wilson
Chinese New Year - The parade was different than expected, but everyone enjoyed it. About 25 people came out, and about 10 have posted photos to the club web site.
Lighting Workshop - 2/18, 10:00
Sheila Yamasaki is leading this workshop at Messiah Lutheran Church in Downingtown. It will start with a demonstration, and then participants will break up into groups to practice. Sheila can answer Nikon-specific questions, and Betsy Barron will be available for Canon shooters. Members who are bringing gear should be sure to label it. So far, 19 members have expressed interest.
Graffiti site - 3/17
Bob Lott will be heading up this shoot. He's hearing rumors about upcoming construction, so opportunities to shoot there may be limited.
Club Shows - Luis Morales
Luis has spoken with the manager at Cosi in Exton about showing club members' work. The manager needs to see a portfolio before agreeing to host the club. Those interested should e-mail Luis by Friday. Luis will send out additional information on Yahoo Groups.
We are currently showing in several store fronts at Exton Mall. In May, there is an show scheduled at Henrietta Hankin Library. Many thanks to Marsha for initiating contact at the library.
Speaker - Arik Gorban - Bad Weather Photography
www.agphotoworks.com
arik.photopoints.com
Arik is a photographer and photography instructor who focuses on the creative aspects of the photographic art form. He has over 30 years experience in the complete photographic process including analog photography, darkroom work, and extensive digital imaging experience. The information in Arik's presentation is available on his website blog.
Arik prefers to shoot in bad weather, because clouds give the best soft light, and add mood and drama. He uses his flash off-camera at every opportunity (except for landscapes).
Here is some of Arik's advice for shooting in specific bad weather situations (thanks to Bob Kuhn for sharing his notes).
1. Use aperture mode. If using manual mode, set the aperture and vary the shutter speed to change the ratio of near and far light.
2. Use a grocery store vegetable bag over a camera in the rain, with the opening of the bag sealed around the end of the lens with a rubber band. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the lens.
3. In snow, over-expose until the histogram is high, without clipping.
4. Photos in fog and mist need a foreground element.
5. Use Photoshop to make light and dark versions of the same RAW file. Put these versions on layers, then use a mask to show light and dark areas.
6. For waterfalls, use a shutter speed of 1/4 sec to 2 sec.
7. In freezing temperatures, put some water in an aluminum pan, and freeze. Add items (such as leaves, stems, berries), then more water, and freeze. Remove from the pan and photograph in different light, at different angles, with different backgrounds. The results are amazing.
8. Photoshop editing is needed for almost all photos, to enhance the colors and tones to match what our eyes saw.

Submitted by Chrys

Potential Opportunity for You at westchester-pa.com

Meghan Kelley from westchester-pa.com has approached CCCC with an opportunity for club members to display and possibly sell images from the West Chester area. westchester-pa.com was founded by three local residents, Mike, Matt and Meghan, who wanted to know more about their community but were frustrated with the options available for gathering this information. They are a one-stop-shop for local businesses. Their web site now has over 400,000 hits per month.

If you are interested, use the contact page on the westchester-pa.com web site to contact Meghan. She is the one receiving those emails.

Here are some details that Meghan Kelly sent me in answer to my questions about posting photos on the web site:

1. Uploading photos: Interested photographers will be given a username and password to login. The login screen is on the bottom right hand corner of the homepage. When I send the username and password, I will also send instructions on how to upload the photos. Once a photographer uploads photos, he or she will need to send me a quick email notifying me of the upload. I will then login to approve the photos.

2. Photo content: The photos can be of people, landscapes, buildings, events, abstract, etc. The only requirement is the content should have a connection to West Chester and the surrounding areas. If a photographer is unsure, he or she can always email me or call and have a discussion.

3. Rights: All rights will belong to the photographer. The photographs cannot be protected from download due to the setup of the site. We recommend that each photographer watermarks the photos.

4. Commission: In order to account for the processing fees and the referral, we will require a commission rate of 25%. We will connect the photographer to the client and handle the actual transaction. The photographer will be responsible for producing the photograph(s) and delivering the photograph(s) to the client.

5. Photographer's Name: If the photographer has the ability to watermark the photos, they are encouraged to do so. If not, they will have the ability to name the folder of pictures when they upload each set. For example, a folder might be named, "West Chester Snowfall by Mike Dempsey".

6. Link to website: If the photographer has a website and would like a link to appear on my web page, they will have the ability to purchase a marketing package or work out an exchange of services. For example, please see Kate Giovinco's banner on my site.

Bob Lott, club president

Before tonight's competition, Bob and Matt Keller worked to calibrate the projector. Hopefully, images will project better. Bob also closed the doors to the gallery to try to minimize the sound for the yoga class in the other gallery.

Bob had a couple of notes on competition uploads. There were some issues with the server, which led to images being improperly labeled. He was able to get them squared away. He also reminded members to be sure to follow the naming conventions (LastName.FirstName.Image Title) when uploading images. If the periods are left out, the software has difficulty, and images may not show up correctly for competition.

Bob thanked Gene, Marty, Tom and Scott for their help cleaning out the closet at the Art Association on Saturday. They made a lot of breathing room, and freed up a cart that holds all of the club's equipment.

The current show in the gallery is the General Membership Show. The theme was Contemporary. Club member Fiona Keyes received an Excellence Award for her image. Bob Lott's show is on display in the other gallery.

Ed Heaton is conducting a webinar tomorrow on Nik Color Efex Pro, co-sponsored by Lowes Pro and Nik

Pre-Meetings - George Chiodo
George will be away for February's and March's meetings. Pat Shorten will lead the meeting in February, and Bob Lott will lead in March. They will send out information on the topics and what equipment to bring, if any.

Mall Display - Luis Morales
CCAA has offered the club two windows in an open storefront. Luis has received one print for the display window at the mall. If you would like to display, e-mail your information to Luis by Thursday at 6:00 PM. Prints will need to be delivered to the mall on Saturday, between 11:00 and 1:00. Prints need to be unframed, wrapped in plastic, and labeled on the back with the photographer's name, the title, and the sales price.

Club Outings - Jim Wilson
Information on the lighting workshop, offered by Sheila Yamasaki (who won four ribbons tonight) was posted today. The Chinatown outing is set for Saturday, January 29th. Details are posted on both the club website and Facebook page.

Monthly Competition - Portrait
Judge: David Eastburn
http://www.davideastburn.com/contact.html
David is a portrait photographer, who also focuses on events and wildlife. He has been a professional photographer since 1980. After working as a contract photographer for many years, he decided to go in a different direction. He has a studio in his home and started working on fine art photography a couple of years ago. He teaches photography at the Art Partner Studio.

He invited Coatesville residents to e-mail him for information on participating in an art show for residents.

Submitted by Chrys
